Frequently Asked Questions

At Aircraft Exhaust Systems LLC, we understand that maintaining your piston powered aircraft can raise many questions, especially when it comes to repaired aircraft exhaust systems. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions our customers have about our repaired parts, services, and the benefits of choosing Aircraft Exhaust Systems LLC.

1. What is a repaired aircraft exhaust system?

A repaired aircraft exhaust system is one that has been repaired to peak condition. At Aircraft Exhaust Systems LLC, our expert technicians inspect, fixture check, and rigid pressure check each exhaust system to ensure it meets the highest industry standards. We only replace the bad parts and keep all the good materials. This is a real money saver, but can only be done if you have time to send in your exhaust.

With an overhaul we need to reuse one part over to make a legal overhaul. We pick the end rings, muffler tab, or a cuff when doing a full overhaul on mufflers. With stacks, we use over a floating flange or a good flange that bolts up to the engine, or a tab to reuse to make a legal overhaul.

2. How do overhauled exhaust systems compare to new parts?

With mufflers/heat exchangers we don’t weld the outer shell. If a bulge or crack happens on the outer shell it is time for a full overhaul. With stacks or mufflers overhauls we replace all the material and reuse a part over to make a legal overhaul. Typical used over items are: the floating flange that connects the muffler to the stack, a outer ring that the heat muff rests on for proper heating of the cabin or some other insignificant part like a tab, heat muff stand offs rings that hold the heat muff in place and others. After any overhaul is performed it goes through the same inspection as described above. The stack or muffler will come back to you meeting all OEM specifications and performance of a new muffler or stack. In most cases the stack or muffler 90-95% new 321 Stainless Steel or Inconel material. Our overhauls look and perform the same as new. Overhauls are a much more cost-effective than new and with one part used over the system that was overhauled is your best solution to get you back flying and save money.

5. What is the cost difference between new and repaired aircraft exhaust systems?

With repairs we only replace the bad material with new material, so the cost savings in most cases is significant compared to the cost of PMA parts or repair shops that automaticaly build all new, no matter what. Most repairs take 3 -7 days in house if there is no backlog in the shop. If you need the part back to you ASAP or in a AOG situation than an off the shelf replacement will be the best option. Off the shelf could be a repaired or overhauled. Just check the item listed in the catalog. You are welcome to use our email or a phone to place your order. All repaired and overhauled items sold off the shelf have core charges that are 100% refundable upon you sending the core back to our location with the core return sheet. A typical with no major back log runs about 3-7 days depending on if it is one part or the entire system.
